LVCRIf you live in Jersey and have more than an ounce of entrepreneur in you, then you’ve probably come across the term LVCR or Low Value Consignment Relief.  The UK press term it as a tax loop hole but basically it’s an EU law that was constructed so that the different EU nations would not have to collect VAT or (GST) on low value imports from non-EU nations.  This was because the cost of collecting this tax would outweigh the actual tax revenue collected.

The good news is that domains drop, expire, and come back into circulation. You can also still come up with some great names. The bad news is that there is a segment of the domain industry that is more than willing to snatch your domain idea if you take one misstep.

Web Design Companies and web designers have in general supported various open source software for developing websites. Joomla and WordPress are two of the most popular ones and have established communities on the internet. There are hundreds of quality forums and blogs dedicated specifically towards the use of Joomla and WordPress for designing websites. other web design and content management systems including Drupal and Typo3 have also proved popular and effective. However WordPress and Joomla seem to have an edge over the others in terms of global popularity and use.

Jersey-FlagGoogle is fantastic.  It's the glue of the world wide web, but sometimes it can be a bit of the pain.  Not least of all if you are searching on a term that has multiple meanings, for example if you're searching for the fruity snack "apple" you might see things in your search relating the giant electronics manufacturer, "Apple".  That kind of incident is probably going to be a one off but if the term is something you use often, like your local region, then the frustration is amplified. 

If you are from Jersey in the Channel Islands, like I am, and have ever been to the U.S. then you’ve probably had a conversation like this:

Content Management System (CMS) ::  
A content management system is what allows company employees to publish new content to their web sites through easy to administrate web based applications. These systems eliminate the need for content writers to be concerned with technical details.


Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) :: The use of various techniques to improve a web site's ranking in search engine result pages and thus attract more visitors.  Can involve optimising web page code, link building, creating Sitemaps and identification and inclusions  of key words and phrases.  


Blog :: Website that allows users to reflect, share opinions, and discuss various topics in the form of an online journal while readers may comment on posts.  Useful method for both attracting new visitors and encouraging existing visitors to return


Web Hosting :: 
The service of hosting a web site on the Internet and making it viewable for other users.  Web sites consist of hundreds of files including text, images and computer code.  The host is the physical computer that stores these files.  


Social Media Marketing :: Using Social Media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to market a company for product.  These methods encourage user interaction and the spreading of their message virally.


Google AdSense :: AdSense is an ad serving application run by Google Inc. Website owners can enroll in this program to enable text, image, and video advertisements on their websites. These advertisements are administered by Google and generate revenue on either a per-click or per-impression basis.


Google AdWords :: Google AdWords offers pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, and site-targeted advertising for both text and banner ads.  Google's text advertisements are short, consisting of one title line and two content text lines.  Image ads can be one of several different standard sizes.


Digital Marketing :: This is a all encompassing term for the promoting of brands and website pages using all forms of digital advertising channels to reach consumers. This includes PPC, organic SEO, blogging, email marketing, SMS, banner advertising, social media amongst a heap of others.


Joomla :: A popular open source (free to use and adapt) content management system (CMS) that allows you to easily build attractive websites and maintain them.  It is easy to use and extendable.   


VirtueMart :: A very comprehensive Shopping Cart plugin that entends the Joomla CMS into a fully functioing e-commerce platform.   


WordPress :: The Web's most widely used CMS, orginally used as a blogging platform but now a full featured CMS.  It is free, fast, easy to use and continually being developed to include new features.  


Magento ::  The defacto e-commerce CMS.  Simple enough to be used by small online shops but powerful enough for enterprise retailers too, Magento is leading the way in enabling commerce on the web.


Linkbuilding :: A technique used to increase your rankings on Google and other search engines through gaining links to your web pages from external websites and social media sites.
